Nowadays, I find myself using open source softwares more often. In the past, whenever I “acquired” and installed non open source softwares, I also have to go through the trouble of locating a “fix” for that particular software.

Open source softwares does not have this hassle, and yeah they can be as good as, or even better than non open source softwares.

Today, I am going to recommend the open source file archiver – 7 Zip!

(Click here to vote for the file archiver you are currently using)
Basic Information:
Official Home Page:
http://www.7-zip.org/

The following is a quote from their site:

The main features of 7-Zip

  • High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression
  • Supported formats:
    • Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
    • Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS
  • For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
  • Self-extracting capability for 7z format
  • Integration with Windows Shell
  • Powerful File Manager
  • Powerful command line version
  • Plugin for FAR Manager
  • Localizations for 63 languages

For myself, ever since I got to know about 7-Zip, I stopped using the rest, since Z-Zip is capable of unpack most of the types of file archive that I would ever come across.

What about you?

    Same here, mate.
I stopped using others once I got to know about 7-Zip.

Actually, I got to know about 7-Zip through a particular package that I acquired off the internet. This package is in .7z format, I was puzzled as I never seen such a file format before. (pretty outdated aye? 😛 ) I did a Google search and found 7-Zip, been using it since then.

Oh by the way, I noticed that although using 7-Zip to archive files in .7z format is way much faster than using 7-Zip to archive files in .zip format, the .7z archive appears to be a few KBs larger than the .zip archive?

Did anyone experienced this before? Is it normal?
    Cheers!
