Finding happiness in life

Once a upon a time in a temple atop a mountain, a little monk was requested to purchase cooking oil.

Before he left, the temple chef gave him a big bowl, and a stern warning:

“You must be careful, our recent financial status is not very good, you must absolutely not spill any oil out.”

After little monk agreed he went down the mountain to the town, to the designated shop by the chef to purchase oil.

On the mountain road way back to the temple, he remembered the chef’s fierce expression and stern warning, the more he thought about it the more tense he became.

Little monk carefully held the bowl now full of oil, taking one step at a time as he walked along the mountain road, not daring to look around his surrounding area.

Unfortunately, as he was approaching the temple entrance, due to not looking in front of him while walking, he stepped into a hole.

Though he did not trip, he split one third of the oil.

Little monk who was now very frustrated, and became so tensed until his hands began to shake, unable to hold the bowl steadily.

When he finally reached the temple, only half of the oil in the bowl remains.

As the chef got hold of the bowl with oil, of course he was very angry, he pointed at the little monk and shouted: “You idiot! Didn’t I tell you to be careful? Still you wasted so many oil! I am so pissed!”

Little monk was very upset when he heard this, and began to shed tears.

Another old monk who overheard the commotion, ran over to ask what was the matter.

After understanding the situation, he consoled the chef, then said to the little monk privately: “I am sending you to purchase oil one more time. This time while on your way back, I want you to spend more time observing the people and surroundings, and I want you to submit a report to me.”

Little monk wanted to reject this task, emphasized that he is unable to hold a bowl of oil properly, and it is impossible for him to hold a bowl of oil, observe the scenery and write a report.

But as the old monk insisted, he forced himself to the road.

On the way back, little monk discovered that the scenery on the mountain road is actually very beautiful.

In the far distance there are the magnificent mountain peaks, and the farmers working on the fields.

A short walk later, he came across a group of children by the roadside open field playing around happily, there are also a pair of elderly person playing chess.

As he walked and admired the scenery, without knowing it he has reached the temple.

As little monk gave the oil to the Chef, he discovered that the oil in the bowl is full, not an ounce less.

Actually, if we would like to lead a happier life, we can also apply what the old monk suggested.

Instead of worrying about our personal results and material profits daily, why not work harder daily in school, work or even life itself, enjoy the process of every experience we encounter, and learn from it as we develop and progress.

One who truly understands how to find happiness in life, would not felt that one’s daily life is full of tension, pressure and worries.

I think, this is also living life pro-actively, a more optimistic view at life.

    Off topic:
All this talk of “sky is falling reminds me of the Walt Disney movie – Chicken Little.

Hilarious movie, at first I disliked it, but after watching it, I enjoyed it!

    Cheers!
